Foundation vs Higher tier GCSE: what's the difference and what does Atom cover?

What's the difference?

Most GCSE exams come in two versions. Both cover the same subject but the questions are different:

  • Foundation: more straightforward questions, designed to secure a solid pass
  • Higher: harder questions that go into more depth, with higher grades available

Your school and teacher will usually decide which tier you're entered for, based on your practice results and classwork. If you're unsure which tier you're sitting, ask your teacher.

Which subjects have tiers?

Not all GCSEs have two tiers. The main ones that do:

  • Maths (all exam boards)
  • Sciences: both Triple and Combined Science (all exam boards)
  • Geography (some exam boards)
  • Modern Foreign Languages: French, Spanish, German

Check with your teacher or your exam board's website to confirm whether your specific subjects have tiers.

What grades are available on each tier?

Tier Grades available
Foundation 1 – 5
Higher 4 – 9 (a U if below the minimum)

The overlap at grades 4 and 5 is sometimes called the "safety net" on Higher. Grade 4 is a standard pass, grade 5 is a strong pass, both matter for sixth form and college entry.

Important: if you sit Higher tier and score below the minimum, you'll receive a U rather than a grade 3 or below. Getting entered for the right tier matters.

How to decide which tier is right for you

Foundation might be right if:

  • You find the subject difficult and want to secure a solid pass
  • Your practice scores are mostly in the grade 1–4 range

Higher might be right if:

  • You're aiming for a grade 6 or above
  • You're planning to take the subject at A-level
  • Your practice scores are consistently grade 5 or above

If you're on the borderline, talk to your teacher, they know your work and can help you decide. You can't change your tier on the day of the exam, so it's worth deciding early and practising on the right papers.

What does Atom cover for Foundation and Higher?

Maths and Science Atom GCSE supports revision for both Foundation and Higher tier in Maths and Science. We have Foundation and Higher practice questions across all topic areas in each subject.

For past papers and practice papers, we currently have Higher tier only. If you're sitting Foundation, ask your teacher which topics will be included so you can focus your practice on those.

Other subjects Foundation and Higher content availability varies by subject; check the subject page within Atom for details on what's covered for your tier.

Further Maths Further Maths is a separate, additional GCSE qualification, it's not the same as the Higher tier Maths paper. Atom covers a lot of the Further Maths content but there are some advanced topics we don't have yet.

Top tip

Make sure you're always practising on the right tier papers. Foundation and Higher questions are structured differently, so revising on the wrong tier won't fully prepare you for what you'll see on exam day. When you sit a practice paper on Atom, treat it like the real exam, work through it in timed conditions, then use Atom's feedback to see exactly where you gained and lost marks.
